Rodoljublje za novo vreme

Večernje novosti - NAJVEĆA zamka patriotizma jeste njegova upotreba kao političkog sredstva, veruje istoričar Čedomir Antić. Političari, smatra on, često mobilišu narod da dobiju podršku na praznim rečima, a građani to velikim delom opravdavaju.

Sex? Not tonight. I’ve got a headache.

Smart Set, by Paula M. Cohen - I loved the pretty stuff in Sex and the City. I was impressed by the esthetic power the film exuded and the joyous response it evoked from its female audience. But now for what I didn’t like. I hope I won’t be pummeled by a Louis Vuitton bag or get a cosmo thrown in my face if I say that the film had some low moments.

The Breakthrough: Feminism and Literary Criticism

Dissent Magazine, by Judith Walzer - How do we know when something starts or when a new phenomenon becomes a major trend? We don’t have a “big bang” theory for the “second wave” of the women’s movement. The common wisdom has been that it began when women who were active in the civil rights and antiwar movements of the 1960s took a good, long look at their radical male comrades and began to question their own subservience.

Hrvatice u kockastom svijetu

The new vegetarianism: meat is more murderous than ever

Guardian - There comes this new vegetarian(ish) agenda, and the chance to make the case against meat-eating on more level-headed grounds: that even if meat will remain part of most people’s diet, they are going to have to eat less of it; and that right now, this is actually more about human lives than those of animals.

Taking More Risks Because You Feel Safe

Washington Post, by Shankar Vedantam - Trying to fix problems that affect vast numbers of people has an intuitive appeal that politicians and policymakers find irresistible, but several warehouses of research studies show that intuition is often a poor guide to fixing systemic problems. While it seems like common sense to pump money into an economy that is pulling the bedcovers over its head, the problem with most social interventions is that they target not robots and machines but human beings — who regularly respond to interventions in contrarian, paradoxical and unpredictable ways.

Crusading is not the answer, but nor is pulling up the drawbridge

Guardian, by Timothy G. Ash - The prospect seems to me more gloomy than 10 or 20 years ago. Presumably, it looks brighter to a communist leader in Beijing, a drug-lord in Afghanistan or an oligarch in Moscow. So much depends on where you sit and what you want. I want my children [...]

Balancing Act: The Other Wilsonianism

World Affairs, by Peter Beinart - Against Social Darwinists who celebrated competition because it hardened the strong and culled the weak, Wilson insisted that selfishness was neither natural nor good. In a nation bitterly divided between rich and poor, urban and rural, immigrant and native born, he saw unregulated self-interest as leading [...]

Why we need a parents’ liberation movement

sp!ked, by Jennie Bristow - We do not need a women’s liberation movement. We have been there, done that, and concluded that men are not the problem after all. What we do need, in the 21st century, is a parents’ liberation movement, to take a stand against the infantilisation and repression of mothers [...]
