This lethal peepshow

Guardian - The point of journalism is not just to show, but to tell: to explain what is going on. And yet the cellar story - and even the cyclone - are most likely to induce a feeling of impotent bewilderment in viewers. These are stories that can not be accommodated by any theory of god or government. In both cases, I have felt guilty about tuning in to such despairing data. The Austrian material made me wonder if a cinema-style system of age certification may soon have to be introduced for news.

A nose for Nazis

Guardian - The truth is that the Fritzl horror reveals precisely nothing about the Austrian people - but the rabid reaction to the Fritzl horror reveals a great deal about the sense of loss, confusion, desperation and chauvinism amongst opinion-formers here at home.

Investigative journalism is already past

Editors Weblog - Ten years from now - 2014 may be slightly too short a time frame - we will still have printed newspapers, because people like reading things in print. Newspapers, just like the book, are convenient to read in places you can’t do with a computer; but my belief is that a lot of what will be printed will be analysis, comment, analysis and opinion. The actual news will be more or less online or in other more timely formats.

Microsoft Drops Bid for Yahoo

BusinessWeek - Microsoft (MSFT) announced on May 3 it was dropping its unsolicited bid to buy Yahoo! (YHOO). The surprise move came after a day in which it appeared the two companies might be closing in on a price per share of Yahoo’s stock in the mid-30s, between Microsoft’s original $31-a-share, half-stock and half-cash offer and Yahoo’s original insistence on at least $40 a share.

American media - On the brink

Economist - THE New York Times once epitomised all that was great about American newspapers; now it symbolises its industry’s deep malaise. The Grey Lady’s circulation is tumbling, down another 3.9% in the latest data from America’s Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). Its advertising revenues are down, too (12.5% lower in March than a year earlier).

The sanctity of evil

Times, by John Habgood - Personal evil is essentially about wilfulness rather than reason, nor can it be subsumed within our rational understanding. Evil in this sense, as part of our humanity, is not a fashionable concept, but we have good reasons to recognize it, not least in ourselves.

Churchill and His Myths

NY Review of Book, by Geoffrey Wheatcroft - Apart from the famous words “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” (deftly filched from Garibaldi in 1849: “Non offro nè paga, nè quartiere, nè provvigioni. Offro fame, sete, marce forzate, battaglie e morte”), that speech proposed Churchill’s [...]
