Pulped fiction
Financial Times - Many of the books that have made great films are unreadable or unread. Alan Le May’s The Searchers, little-known in print, was transformed into the greatest western by John Ford. Boileau and Narcejac’s D’entre les Morts, a French thriller seldom taken out of libraries, was the building material for Hitchcock’s Vertigo, ex aequo with Citizen Kane for some critics (including this one) as the greatest ever film. Robert Bloch wrote a slash-and-shock potboiler that became Psycho, a Hitchcock masterpiece.
