Opsenar i svetski lik

Depression costs over half a billion a year

Helsingin Sanomat - Increasing numbers of employees in Finland are taking early retirement resulting from depression. Last year a new record was set when 4,300 people went on disability pension for depression, representing growth of more than nine per cent from the previous year. Depression and other mental health disorders are already as common a reason for disability pension as the traditional primary cause - diseases of the bones and muscles.

Suckers: How Alternative Medicine Makes Fools Of Us All

New Humanist, by Natalie Haynes - For many years, the scientific community has watched the rise of shamanism in our culture with a weary shrug. You can’t really blame them: whenever they suggest that there’s no evidence for homeopathy, or that it might not actually be a very good idea to self-medicate with St Johns Wort when you use an oral contraceptive, they receive a barrage of abuse from people who simply don’t want to know. Scientists are often, in my experience, charming, funny and brilliant, but somehow in the media they become abrasive, shrill and out of touch.

The myth of trafficking

New Statesman, by Brendan O’Neill - Most migrant women, including those in the sex industry, have made a clear decision, says a new study, to leave home and take their chances abroad. They are not “passive victims” in need of “saving” or sending back by western campaigners.

Are we losing in Afghanistan?

Telegraph Blogs by Daniel Hannan - Adam Holloway argues in the current Spectator that Britain cannot win the war in Afghanistan. Our presence, he believes, is causing net radicalisation: we are, bluntly, creating more militants than we kill. We should give up on our more ambitious hopes for drug eradication and multi-party democracy and women’s rights. Our best bet is to reach some sort of accommodation with the black-turbaned fundamentalists.
