Out of vogue
Economist - In America and Europe magazine publishers have a common lament: total circulation is either flat or declining slightly as people devote more time to the internet, and an ever greater share of advertising spending is going online. Magazine units are mostly a drag on growth for their parents. Time Inc, the world’s biggest magazine company, has to fend off rumours that its parent, Time Warner, will sell it. People in the industry expect that Time Warner will soon sell IPC Media, its British magazine subsidiary. In Germany publishers reckon that Bertelsmann, a media conglomerate, may sell Gruner + Jahr, its magazine unit, when its new chief executive takes over in January 2008.

Faulty Sarkonomics
Economist - As recent events have shown, central bankers cannot act entirely outside their political context. In most countries suitable channels exist for governments to make their views known, without threatening their central banks’ independence. A “euro group” of finance ministers exists, but there is little genuine dialogue between national governments and the ECB. Sadly Mr Sarkozy’s attacks only make the ECB more stubborn in refusing to listen to politicians. Yet it could find it helpful to have more exchanges with national governments—provided they are discreet and unpublicised. Making monetary policy by megaphone never leads to good results.

Last year philosopher Daniel Dennett published Breaking the Spell (Viking), British scientist Richard Dawkins followed with The God Delusion (Houghton Mifflin), and writer Sam Harris, described by Zoll as “a little-known graduate student” until his successes, has been grabbing middlebrow readers with his The End of Faith (Norton, 2004) and Letter to a Christian Nation (Knopf, 2006).
