Salvation in the Seychelles
Telegraph - I have wanted to visit the Seychelles ever since “Mad Mike” Hoare and his motley gang of lightweight mercenaries made their attempt at mounting a coup against Albert René’s socialist government in 1981. I knew Mad Mike - he once tried to persuade me to join his mercenaries - and I was rather surprised he had indulged in such an amateurish adventure at an age when he should have been sitting on a beach reading his beloved Shakespeare with an ice-cold beer close at hand.

Summer 2007: Hvar, Croatia
Times - When I first arrived in Hvar Town, I almost wondered if the ferry from Split had taken a wrong turn and I’d ended up in EuroDisney. The small harbourfront town is almost too picturesque to be real; shiny cobbles, a central square dominated by elegant Venetian architecture lined with white-canopied cafes and a village of terracotta-roofed houses and tiny streets clustered up the hill behind.

Maserati Gran Turismo’s art of seduction
Telegraph - The GranTurismo is a very beautiful, very fast and very comfortable GT in the true sense of the term. It’s a grown-up car from a marque that no longer has much to prove, and a lot of grown-up people with nothing to prove are going to fall head over heels in love with it.

Volatility sweeps global markets
BBC - US stock markets have dropped sharply, extending a global share sell-off amid fears about the effect of higher interest rates on the world economy. There are concerns that higher rates will hit corporate profits and takeover deals, and dent consumer spending. European markets were also jittery, with London’s share index closing down for a fourth day and ending at its lowest level since the middle of March.

Can Gates, Soros and Branson Create a Better World?
Spiegel - Saving the planet used to be a hobby practiced by treehuggers and other romantics. Now it has become the business of executives and billionaires. Pragmatists like Bill Gates, George Soros and Richard Branson are outdoing themselves in a bid to save the planet by applying a good dose of entrepreneurial spirit.

A New Deal for Globalization
Foreign Affairs, by Kenneth F. Scheve and Matthew J. Slaughter - Globalization has brought huge overall benefits, but earnings for most U.S. workers — even those with college degrees — have been falling recently; inequality is greater now than at any other time in the last 70 years. Whatever the cause, the result has been a surge in protectionism. To save globalization, policymakers must spread its gains more widely. The best way to do that is by redistributing income.
