How I Spent the War

by Günter Grass
I tried to pick a quarrel with my father. It wasn’t easy. It would have taken massive recriminations, and, peace-loving family man that he was, he was quick to give in. Anything to maintain harmony. The progenitor had a constant wish for the offspring on his lips: “I want your life to be better. . . . You will have a better life than ours.” Try as I might to turn him into a bugbear, he was not made for the role.

Time for China to challenge its rural stigma

As a long-time China observer, I have always been impressed by the Chinese willingness to scrutinize one’s own shortcomings as a first and key step toward self-improvement. China has developed tremendously in the two decades since my first visit and this development is in large part due to societal introspection combined with a strong curiosity about how other nations have developed quickly.

Political donations: It’s clean - trust me

The new law on election financing was supposed to guarantee that the people know the linkages of their representatives. This has not happened. Members of Parliament were supposed to submit reports by Monday last week on where their election campaign funds came from. And they did, indeed, give an accounting. So what did we find out? That the reports were pure evasions. Now we know that election funds came from art sales, as well as from vague supporters’ associations, admission fees to seminars, and in the case of Kyösti Karjula, “from the proceeds of a quiz”. It is also something of a guessing game as to how the supporters’ associations got their money, what happened in a seminar, or which companies supported which candidates.

Living in a world of $200 oil

Financial Times - For rich countries, the $125 oil price will be a noticeable drag on economic growth; for poor countries, when combined with higher food prices, it will mean more poverty. Oil supply should grow in response but if it does not, $200 oil is just about conceivable. It would cause [...]
