Why doesn’t the EU join Switzerland?

via Telegraph Blogs

by Daniel Hannan

Here’s my latest wheeze. Every time the European Parliament meets in session, I make a speech on a more or less random subject. My theory is that, if you turn over almost any stone in the EU, you’ll find some creepy crawlies under it.

Think your car’s powerful? Try a Eurofighter Typhoon!

The problem with the 414bhp you think you have in your Audi RS4 is that it isn’t actually there all the time. It’s the engine’s peak power, and if you want to make use of it you’ll have to work your way towards it, matching gear ratio to speed and all that other stuff that can be found in the police Roadcraft manual. If you’re good at this, though, the RS4 will be quite exciting. But I’ve decided that 400bhp is a bit pussy. I’ve just been for a sortie in the Eurofighter Typhoon, which has 40,000lb of thrust. And that’s more like it.

From White House to Abu Ghraib

by Sasha Abramsky
Thirty-six years ago, Philip Zimbardo, a young psychologist at Stanford University, set up an experiment intended to explore how normal young men would behave if put into a prison setting. Zimbardo’s team advertised for paid volunteers, screened the applicants for mental abnormalities and personality disorders, divvyed up the chosen ones into guards and prisoners, and then kicked off the experiment.

The puppet who cleared the way for Iraq’s destruction

by Andrew Cockburn
Among those relishing the exposure of World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz’s manoeuvres on behalf of his girlfriend, Shaha Riza, in recent weeks was almost certainly the former US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld was driven from public life thanks to the catastrophe of Iraq, and for the moment at least lurks in obscurity. Wolfowitz, his deputy until 2005, contributed in almost equal measure to the debacle, yet managed to slide from the Pentagon into the presidency of a leading international institution with every chance to redeem himself. Blame for torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo, bungling over troop levels, chaos in Iraq’s reconstruction, and the general meltdown in Pentagon management has all too often been laid at Rumsfeld’s door alone. However, Wolfowitz was an energetic enabler of these outrages and many other notorious initiatives.

Putin Plays Hard Ball as Rice Reassures ‘Soviets’

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday that Russia will impose a moratorium on an arms control deal with NATO. Conflict over plans by the United States to build a missile defense shield in Europe continues to grow, with Moscow proving resistant to American attempts to include Russia and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice slowly losing patience with the “Soviets.” The rhetoric heated up Thursday as Putin, in his annual speech to both houses of parliament, said he was suspending Russia’s obligations under the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty, in response to the US missile shield plans. He said the NATO signatories to the treaty were not respecting it, and criticized US plans to locate elements of the anti-missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, saying they create “real dangers and possibly unpleasant surprises.” The US claims that the planned missile shield is intended to protect the US and its European allies from a ballistic missile attack from a so-called “rogue” state such as Iran.

Bad, or worse

Economist - The rich world’s economies were either shrinking, or close to it, long before September. Recent weeks have made a rich-world recession all but inevitable. America’s economy lost steam throughout the summer. Temporarily buoyed by fiscal stimulus and strong exports, output grew at a solid 2.8% annualised rate between April and June. [...]

Moment of Truth

NY Times, by Paul Krugman - The United States and Europe should just say “Yes, prime minister.” The British plan isn’t perfect, but there’s widespread agreement among economists that it offers by far the best available template for a broader rescue effort.

French novelist Le Clézio wins Nobel literature prize

Independent - By choosing Le Clézio, 68, who was the clear favourite, the Nobel committee of the Swedish literary academy caused substantial pain to British bookmakers. The committee also, implicitly, restated its much-publicised criticism last week of the American literary establishment as too inward-looking and too ignorant of foreign literature and thought.

Who Will Look After the Economy Until January?

American Prospect, by Robert Kuttner - Bush, Bernanke, Paulson, and the incoming president would do well to avoid the mistakes of the Hoover-Roosevelt interregnum, a stand-off that made it even more arduous to climb out of the Great Depression once Roosevelt finally took office.

How to build on the rate cuts

Financial Times - The turmoil in financial markets shows no sign of abating. The sweeping cuts in interest rates by central banks on Wednesday, as the UK took the historic step of part-nationalising its biggest banks to bolster their shattered balance sheets, failed to calm investors’ nerves. To restore confidence in the [...]

‘The Coordinated Rate Cuts Change Little’

Spiegel - Markets seemed slightly more stable on Thursday, a day after central banks around the world lowered interest rates in a concerted effort. But will the rate cut ultimately have the desired effect? Many German commentators are pessimistic.
