Artist’s Chocolate Jesus Raises Ire
The Easter season unveiling of an anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ, dubbed “My Sweet Lord” by its creator, has infuriated Catholics preparing to observe some of their holiest days of the year. “This is one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever,” said Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League, a watchdog group.

Fiat Bravo
You can sense that the new Bravo is vitally important for Fiat. It has been created in just 18 months from concept-freeze to production, an industry record achieved because most of the design and engineering, including testing, was done by computer using virtual cars, components and test routines. Real prototypes weren’t created until the end of the process, by which time most of the flaws had been fixed and the tooling developed. So Fiat could not only speed up development time and cut costs, but also try many more variations of component design before settling on the best solutions.

Revisiting the Stanford Prison Experiment
By the 1970s, psychologists had done a series of studies establishing the social power of groups. They showed, for example, that groups of strangers could persuade people to believe statements that were obviously false. Psychologists had also found that research participants were often willing to obey authority figures even when doing so violated their personal beliefs. The Yale studies by Stanley Milgram in 1963 demonstrated that a majority of ordinary citizens would continually shock an innocent man, even up to near-lethal levels, if commanded to do so by someone acting as an authority.

We need a five-year freeze on biofuels
Already we know that biofuel is worse for the planet than petroleum. The UN has just published a report suggesting that 98% of the natural rainforest in Indonesia will be degraded or gone by 2022. Just five years ago, the same agencies predicted that this wouldn’t happen until 2032. But they reckoned without the planting of palm oil to turn into biodiesel for the European market. This is now the main cause of deforestation there and it is likely soon to become responsible for the extinction of the orang-utan in the wild.

A class of drugs widely prescribed for people suffering from dementia is leading to the premature deaths of thousands of patients every year, according to research published today. Campaigners branded the continued use of the sedatives, called neuroleptics, a national scandal after a five-year study revealed that people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are twice as likely to die if they are prescribed them.
